In this past year of remote learning, students have been joining Nepris sessions directly more than ever. Given that schools are very sensitive to the security and safety of their students, we are requiring background checks for volunteers before they talk to students. We appreciate your understanding as we work to keep all of our sessions safe and secure. This ultimately provides more access to students you can reach!
- Background Checks. We will request a background check from you after you commit to participating in a session but before you are able to present. This check will verify your identity, search the sex offender registry and conduct a national criminal background check.
- Web Presence. We may do a high level web search of your internet presence. We know teachers and students will do web searches of our volunteers who sign up to talk to them so content that is easily found may determine if you can participate in a Nepris session.
Who will run the background check?
We are currently working with Checkr.com, an FCRA compliant company, who does this for a lot of other organizations for their employee and volunteer verification.
How do I get started?
You will receive an email from email@example.com after you accept or offer a session with a link to get started which will look something like this:
What information do you collect?
Nepris doesn't collect any information. We only provide an email address to Checkr and you provide the rest of the information on their site. The data asked for includes: Legal name, Date of Birth, Social Security Number, Zip Code, Contact phone, Contact email. Some things to note: Nepris will not have access to your social security number. We leave that to the FCRA compliant company. Checkr is not running a credit check. The Social Security number is used by Checkr as a pointer to identities tied to the Social Security number to be run against the background. If you don't have a social security number or are international, we can work with you outside of this program.
Do I have to pay for it?
No. Nepris will incur all costs.
What if you find something?
You will have access to the full report on Checkr. In compliance with the FCRA, Checkr has a process in place to dispute any findings.
Do I have to do this for every session?
The checks are done only if you haven't completed a background check with Nepris in the last calendar year and offer to present on a session.
Does anyone that signs up on Nepris have to get a background check?
Anyone can sign up to create a profile on Nepris. We do not restrict professionals on signing up. We only ask when you offer to participate in a live session.
I have already done a background check for my job or the government. Do I need to do another one?
I am sure many of our volunteers have been background checked as part of their job. However, organization policies differ and unless we have a clear agreement and understanding of a partner's policy, we will ask everyone to do a background check that would want to give back to K12 education and volunteer to be consistent and fair.
Can you provide more information about the web presence search?
We know teachers and students will sometimes search our volunteers who sign up. They aren't looking for anything bad and the teacher may actually give an assignment to look up the person so they can prepare questions for the speaker, for example. So we do some simple searches on name, company, location to see what pops up. If we find it easily, others will find it too. Context is everything but we will be concerned about R-rated language, positive references or use or promotion of illegal drugs, nudity, overtly erotic or sexual content, anti-school sentiment, racism, xenophobia.
For a complete outline of some of our security policies and procedures involving volunteers, this document will have additional information.
